Serpentine News

I am excited to announce that The Serpentine Project will formalized our ongoing collaboration with The Alliance for Children’s Rights effective January 17, 2011. Moving forward, The Serpentine Project will be a program within the Alliance’s Next Step Department. Next Step provides an array of support services for aged-out youth, including legal assistance, a mentor program and advocacy training.

As a new member of the Next Step team, I will continue to develop our Wellness Curriculum and provide support in the areas of academics, housing and employment to a larger community of age-out youth. I will also have the pleasure of continuing the one-on-one support we have been providing our Serpentine Youth for years.

I am optimistic that amazing things will come from our merge with The Alliance for Children’s Rights. By joining forces, our ability to make a real impact on aged-out youth will grow exponentially. Please join me and continue to support our Serpentine Youth by extending your support to The Alliance for Children’s Rights.

With gratitude,

August 4th Fundraiser- Aging Out: The Musical

The Serpentine Project is excited to have partnered up with the Academy for New Musical Theater and UC-Irvine’s Department of Drama to present the August 4th showing of Aging Out: The Musical at 8:00 pm. The show was fun, energetic, and also very moving. It told the story of a group of youth aging out of foster care and the challenges they face as they take on the “real world” on their own. Proceeds from ticket sales were split equally between the three partnership organizations. For those who could make it, thanks for joining us for this great performance for a good cause!

Thank You, Pardee Properties!

The Serpentine Project would like to thank Pardee Properties for bestowing a generous recent donation to our organization. We are very grateful, and the funds gifted to The Serpentine Project will make a difference in the lives of the aged-out foster youth we support. Thank you, Eric and Amber, for choosing to make this gift to support the dreams of Serpentine Youth.

Summer 2010 Wellness Workshops for Serpentine Youth

The Serpentine Project will be conducting four sessions of Wellness Workshops for Serpentine Youth this Summer. The workshops help guide our aged-out foster youth to stay fit, keep on track with their goals, and make healthy choices. Check out our schedule of lessons, and enjoy Myriam’s own Seafood Gumbo recipe. We sure did!

Take a trip into our kitchen and enjoy this short video of our first Wellness Workshop Cooking Lesson conducted by Director, Elizabeth Lott, and featuring Serpentine Youth Dominique, Myriam, and Liz.

Alison Sweeney of The Biggest Loser, Phil Keoghan of The Amazing Race, and organization founder, Jeff Probst, with Serpentine Youth at our Spring Friendraiser

Thanks For Making Our Spring Friendraiser a Success!

On Sunday, February 26th, The Serpentine Project’s founder, Jeff Probst, opened his home to new friends in celebration of our annual Spring Friendraiser. It was a relaxing afternoon filled with cupcakes, warm conversation, and support for the dreams of recently emancipated foster care youth.

After a welcome from our afternoon host, The Serpentine Project’s Director, Elizabeth Lott, took the stage (or rather, the steps next to the hot tub) and explained the organization’s dedication to helping young adults who have emancipated out of foster care to realize their dreams. Serpentine Youth, Liz, Dominique and Jessica, answered questions and shared their stories about turning 18 and aging out of the system. When asked about the greatest impact that The Serpentine Project has had on her life, Liz answered,

“When you’re having a hard time, everyone in life tells you, ‘oh, you can do it. You can get through it.’ But they don’t know how hard it is. But when someone at The Serpentine Project tells me that I can do it, I know I can. I know that The Serpentine Project really cares about me and believes in me.”

Thank you to everyone who could make it to our friendraiser! It was great to see so many smiling and supportive faces. If you couldn’t make it, or would like to be kept in the loop about current happenings at The Serpentine Project, please sign up for our e-mail list.
